Lenny Kravitz is known for proudly wearing his influences on his sleeve, but on his sixth album it's clear Kravitz has at last honed a sound he can call his own. Mixing hard rock and ballads, Lenny kicks in with the blistering "Battlefield of Love," a solid rocker with a funk groove. The retro "If I Could Fall in Love" displays a touch of psychedelia, while the Lennonesque "God Save Us All" is bluesy and uplifting. The success of "Again," the smash single from his 2000 hits package, appears to have registered with Kravitz, who surfaces a new crop of midtempo ballads here--all far stronger than "Again." "Yesterday Is Gone (My Dear Kay)" is a finely crafted tune on it's own, yet Kravitz experiments with atypical sounds. The soulful "Stillness of Heart" builds with acoustic guitars and layered harmonies, concluding with a lovely string arrangement. And "You Were in My Heart" mixes synth loops over solid rhythms and a haunting melody. Lenny may seem like an oddly nondescript title, but it's apt; these 12 songs simply sound like the work of Lenny Kravitz. --Gail Flug

Very cool hip funk rock album...

This album mixed up newer styles, and sounds into Lenny's familiar kind of rock/pop mix with great results. It freshened up his sound, with a few modern hip hop, electro sounds in with the rock guitar riffs, funk bass lines and love ballards. Great new sounding album for modern times.

Pretty bad album...compared to Kravitz's early works.

I've been a huge fan of Lenny, but only up to the album '5.' With the 5 album, he found his "new" sound, but I just think that it's a bit bland and generic for me. I've seen him live twice, and one of the best rock and roll concerts I have experienced; was him performing at the Roseland Ballroom, NYC, during the late 90's. This album (LENNY), was a pain for me to go through, and I had to skip most of the tracks. The single 'Dig In' is just awful and boring, the lyrics have not gotten better, and the whole visual look of the album seems pretentious. I'm not even going to venture into the 'Baptism' album, I think the album cover alone gives me a clue of what I'm going to hear. Kravitz got a lot of criticism back during his early works for imitating too closely the musicians he idolized, like Jimmy Hendrix or even the Beatles. I personally did not care about the criticism, I just thought that his work was original and very cool. The truth is that almost every rock and roll artist has been influenced by some musician or some band. I'm not saying that I want the old Lenny back, it's just that I'm not a fan of his new material. I've heard a few singles of the Love Revolution album, and it was just ok, but definitely better than the Lenny album. Other than that, I guess that's all I have to say...

I have read many reviews stating that this effort from Lenny was not in the top ten, but I beg to differ! He is still got that same prince/sly stone/funkadelic/black murda/ fugi/curtis mayfield funk combination that I am used 2.And at the same time being totally original.

This album is a true classic. While its not perfect, this album is great because it shows the return of Lenny to his full form. After one horrible album, and one mediocre funk album, he released this album and he returned to his Pop/Rock roots and it really bennefitted him. While first week sales werent nothing to brag about this time around, he at least made an album worth listening to. What really helped this album was the single "Again" which actually wasnt even on this album, it was a new track on his Greatest Hits album released the year before this album. But "Again" helped steer him away from that Funk music, and lead him back into that soft rock style that everyone loves him for. The biggest song off this album is obviously the fan favorite "Dig In" which pretty much just says "Live life to the fullest". But the other standout tracks are the soothing and mellow "Stillness Of Heart", which was cut from the same cloth as "Again". "Believe In Me", which almost has a mid tempo R&B feel to it, and "Battlefield Of Love" which is pretty much a typical Lenny track. But the best thing about this album is that it showed that Lenny returned to full form again, after an almost career ending blow. Its not a front to back classic, but its definetly worth your time if u like Lenny Kravitz.

Some of the songs kinda blend together but songs like If I Could Fall In Love, Yesterday Is Gone (My Dear Kay) and Dig In revive you from total monotony, the latter mainly the strongest and most noticeable melody.

At first listen many, many months ago, I was ready to say goodbye and never listen to this CD again. I'm glad I didn't! Lenny actually has a bit to say unlike his rapper counterparts, although his lyrics, while mostly done by him aren't very amazing.

His CD 5 and Mama Said are still better in my eyes, but this CD isn't too bad.

72/100 points.

end note: all of the tracks are slower tunes or mid-tempos so you may get bored the first time through (like I did) but give it a chance, especially if you're a fan.
