Revenge, Southern Style
Rating (5)
Date: 2008-06-04

This is a favorite old novel. I've loved it for years. The story centers around a Southern Belle with a secret. She uses telekinesis to get what she wants, and if anyone crosses her path, she makes them pay. It is very much like Carrie, only with a Southern Twist. It has a rich plot. And it's a fun read.

I do not agree with the previous reviewer. If you love John Saul and you love VC Andrews then you will love Cherron. These people are far from redneck, backwoods people.

Sarah Bankroft is a rich tobacco plantation owner in the swamps of northern Florida in the late 1970's, and the name of the plantation is Cherron. Cherron has been in her family for generations, and Sarah inherited it because her parents and siblings died. Her family would never have given her the plantation; in fact they despised her and treated her as an outcast because as a child and young teen she was not as attractive as the other children and she was overweight. Her parents and siblings treated her like she had The Plague and would make her stay in her room when company came over. Only Sarah's cousin Martin treats her kindly and they ultimately become lovers, a secret which is discovered by their family.

When Sarah is young, she meets an old woman named Adela who teaches Sarah to use a special power given to her - the power to control the actions of people and objects. Unlike "Carrie" who could only move things with her mind (telekinesis), Sarah's powers are far more comprehensive. She is able to make flowers die, mushrooms become poisonous, and she is able to make people's hearts stop beating. Sarah uses, and abuses, this power to take revenge on all of the people who treated her horrible as a child.

From the beginning of the book, a man named Jonathan comes to Cherron to write the Bankroft Family history. He knows things aren't quite right with Sarah, her widowed aunt who lives with her, and her cousin Martin, but he cannot figure it out. All Jonathan knows is that he is mesmerized by Sarah, and that at night her and Martin go down to her secret rooms in the basement, in which nobody else is allowed. Sarah has a sister who is presumed dead by everyone, but is she? Jonathan is determined to find out what or who is in that locked basement, and you will have to read the book to find out!!!

I though it was great...I hope I can get my hands on another copy locally because my cousin wants to read it and I don't want to part with mine!!

A cheap, plantation, redneck, "CARRIE"

Hmmm, this was a horrible novel. It's like rich, plantation owner, meets a "carrie white" from backwoods alabama. It is horribly unoriginal, written on a second graders reading level...the most complicated word was probably telekinesis...however, the deaths were slightly exciting.
